The KaTembe’s Urbanization Plan was a challenge accepted by BETAR to solve Maputo city’s crowdy situation. The city is suffocated in the North by very large areas of informal construction and the erection of the new Maputo/KaTembe bridge is a key opportunity to solve those needs for urban expansion.

Focused on creating a new and inclusive centrality of Maputo, offering higher quality of life and accessibilities, the global strategic planning for the region and its various urban infrastructures followed a smart city concept based on principles of environmental and social sustainability.

The Plan foresees, details, organizes and prioritizes the construction and its implementation in the region to accommodate around 400 000 inhabitants within a 30-year project horizon.

The urban area is divided into 13 Execution Units according to the characteristics of land use, population density and proximity to the coastline, distinguishing housing, commerce, services, residential tourism, industry, logistics and leisure.

The Plan details the occupation of the territory and the urban infrastructure to be established. It includes road network hierarchy and cycle lanes, water supply systems and separative sanitation, energy and telecommunications networks, waste treatment plants and municipal waste, green spaces for recreation and for agriculture production, equipment for tourism and logistics/industry. It was approved by the Ministry of State and Administration and is already passed into Law!

The development of KaTembe is a unique urban project in Africa as it will be the first inclusive post-independence city, stablished close to the existing downtown, built from scratch, equipped with complete infrastructures and accessibilities and following international best practices raising Maputo to the forefront of the 21st century.
