The Ressano Garcia line provides communication between Mozambique and South Africa. It is a line used for heavy rail traffic, for transporting goods (ore and cereals) and passenger traffic. It allows the supply of services to "hinerland", exporters and with the need for fast transport and access to international traffic ports for the diffusion of products in foreign markets. This rail corridor controls the uninterrupted flow of goods from the Agro-Industrial catchment area south of Save and is therefore of essential importance.
The existing bridge was replaced by two steel decks simply supported, one for each track, with a single span of 20.40m. Each deck is composed of a grid system consisting of two 1.35m high web girders, transversal beams 3.40m apart, and two central stringers that receive the entire track system.
The decks are supported on reinforced concrete abutments, which were built in front of the abutments of the previous construction.
