Tell us a little about the beginning of your professional career. Did you meet at the Aires Mateus e Associados studio?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PAr’s share a happy experience at the Aires Mateus studio, where we worked for a long time, with responsibility for projects of various scales and programmes.
\nDuring this period, due to the solid personal and intellectual affinity we created, we started working together on our own projects. It was at this time that we experimented with discussing architecture as authors, laying the foundations for PAr’s interests and concepts that were developed over the following years.<\/p>\n

In 2006 Susana dos Santos Rodrigues and Joana Carmo Sim\u00f5es founded PAr, a project that was joined in 2009 by V\u00e2nia Brito Fernandes. How and why did the idea of creating your own space come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the last decade, the path of partnership and common knowledge we had already travelled allowed us to focus exclusively on PAr’s projects. Since then, we have been consistently committed to the ethical and aesthetic values of the PAr language.
\nThe creation of our space was a consequence of the path we had been travelling together. Initially, we founded the studio in Lisbon. Shortly afterwards, taking advantage of V\u00e2nia Brito Fernandes’ affinity with the region, we moved to the Algarve, where we now have two studios.<\/p>\n

You have two offices, one in Lisbon and the other in Faro. How does your collaboration work more than 250 kilometers apart? What methodology do you use to develop your projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Geographical distance has never been an obstacle to the development of projects, as we have well-founded and solid principles and PAr bases. We don’t see it as a limit but as a bridge, a more comprehensive and stimulating way of dealing with various realities, from a cultural, historical or social point of view.
\nThe main methodology is a willingness to share. It involves the use of digital work tools and remote communication common to all, but also very frequent physical meetings. We would venture to say that distance has brought us even closer to each other; we are constantly sharing and discussing.<\/p>\n

PAr is interested in reinterpreting architectural cultures in the light of contemporary times. Your projects always maintain their own identity. What do you look for when you start designing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, this is a very solid principle in our work. Architectural reinterpretation interests us across the board, whether it’s intervention in pre-existing buildings or new construction. We see the cultural environment, in the context of the project, as our own mental construction. The study of the identity of the place, with references that are close or distant, physically and temporally, is also part of our design process. We seek this out as a way of creating freedom.
\nWe also recognize an architectural knowledge that is common to different cultures and locations, taking on different forms of implementation locally, both material and formal. This knowledge concerns concepts that are transversal not only to places but also to times (such as light, orientation, weight, mass, temperature, relationship with nature, etc). It is a wisdom that is also valid for the patterns and challenges of contemporary life.<\/p>\n

The atelier’s focus is on residential areas and refurbishment, and they make great use of natural and traditional materials. What is the CASA CH\u00c3 concept?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CASA CH\u00c3 concept emerged as a summary of our project process, understanding \u2018house\u2019 as a place of human activity (and not just residential activity) and \u2018ch\u00e3\u2019 as the valorization of the simple things typical of a place (whose existence is not physically or temporally closed). This idea is read in conjunction with other layers, such as the use of natural and local materials, respect for traditional typologies, harmonious design and excellent environmental performance.
\nFrom this concept, we work on the various programs and scales and explore the most appropriate responses. The principle of cultural reinterpretation does not restrict us in terms of solutions, although it is the basis of a common identity for our works.<\/p>\n

PAr has often been shortlisted for official architecture awards, such as the most recent National Urban Rehabilitation Award, which they won in 2024 with the \u2018Casa 1923\u2019 project. What do the awards say about your work? How do you view this kind of recognition?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We carry out our work with depth and commitment. The works we build and live in (with the potential to contribute to the happiness of those who inhabit them) are enormously rewarding in themselves, in a very autonomous way.
\nHowever, we are grateful for the awards. The project work has a great social and environmental impact, and the awards are first and foremost a recognition of the importance of architecture. We therefore see them as incentives for consistency in our project work.<\/p>\n
